Course Outline

This agenda has been evolving for half a century from the 1972 UN Stockholm Environment Summit, through the 1992 Rio Earth Summit and culminating in 2015 the UN Sustainable Development Goals (that cover the future of everything, geared to 2030 and the Paris Climate Agreement with its 1.5o desired temperature increase cap and regularly increasing greenhouse gas reduction, geared to 2050.

The Earth Charter emerged as a concept during the Rio Earth Summit for a contract between people and the planet. It was finally launched in 2005 by Maurice Strong and Mikael Gorbachev and is linked to the UN University of Peace in Costa Rica.

SUNx Malta is a not for profit, EU based, organization, partnered with the government of Malta that has created a unique, low cost, system to help companies & communities transform to the New Climate Economy.

We continue the vision of our mentor, the late Maurice Strong – Climate Activist & Sustainable Development pioneer, acting as a catalyst for sector change & a conduit to mainstream UN Climate & Sustainability targets.

We advance and enable “Climate Friendly Travel” (CFT) ~ Low Carbon: SDG linked: Paris 1.5 trajectory, building SDG-17 Partnerships. We deliver an annual State of the Sector Report and related Think Tank, to support the Travel & Tourism sector in its CFT transformation. Our two points of focus are Action in the form of a Registry of CFT 2050 Ambitions, and Education through our CFT Diploma and Summer School.

This will cover the goal and structure of the CFT System designed to help Travel & Tourism companies and communities to transform over time to be Zero GHG by 2050. It will explore the three system components: Commit to CFT – Enrol on the Registry – Engage with Climate Champions (link to video).

The Climate Friendly Travel Registry for 2050 Sustainability & Climate Ambitions is the Travel & Tourism entry to the UNFCCC Climate Action Portal. All companies and communities can commit, plan, and record their action programs in the Registry and receive support to achieve their green sustainability goals and clean carbon reduction targets.

The CFT Resilience System provides Climate risk analysis and tools for companies and communities to build Resilience into their SDG and Climate Plans. This session will cover basic concepts of Climate Risk as well as explore in-depth the SUNx Malta approach to Resilience building using models from our SDG-17 Partner Risk Layer and their Hotel Resilience framework.

Climate Friendly Travel to Zero is our flagship initiative, aligned with the UN Race to Zero. Based on the latest science, a 2050 target of Zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) is the minimum ultimately needed to beat the existential Climate Crisis. By advocating a Zero GHG 2050 target we take the direct line to the UN Paris 1.5 goal. Starting now.

2021 sees the launch of a Decade of Climate Friendly Travel, supported by National Climate Champions Programmes. This will culminate in 100,000 STRONG Climate Champions across all UN States by 2030 helping to deliver a global Climate Friendly Travel transformation. This is carrying on the vision of Maurice Strong, the father of Sustainable Development, who believed that Travel & Tourism could be a catalyst for positive change driven by youth.
