Uganda - African Leadership in Climate Friendly Travel

During the past years, SUNx Malta has been training students to become Climate Friendly Travel champions in their own country. By now, we have some 100 local Climate friendly Travel Chapters, led by local Champions, and overseen by our global chapter coordinator in Zimbabwe.
Chapter leaders are asked to create a local community of climate Friendly Travel experts, recruit hotels, lodges and other hospitality outlets to join the CFT Registry, and consider the development of relevant local activities.
One of the very successful Chapter leaders is Tony Ofungi in Uganda, who now has a community of nearly 100 Uganda hospitality representatives. The Uganda Chapter includes small tour operators, local community initiatives and homesteads, but also 5-star hotels and exclusive lodges.

Uganda Leadership

The Government of Uganda has also joined the Climate Friendly Travel Community through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).  Their tourism officer is keen to incorporate climate action in the work of the UWA, and this is particularly relevant as a large proportion of international tourism to Uganda is based on gorilla watching in the mountains of southwestern Uganda.
During the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo 2024 in Kampala in May this year, SUNx Malta and its local Chapter presented the case for climate action in tourism and promoted more Climate Friendly Travel to support socio-economic and environmental development in the country.  We are confident that more will happen in the coming months and years.
We awarded scholarships for a short course in CFT to be organized with support of a local Registry Member as a part of building outreach in the local community.
