Responding to the Nairobi Declaration

The Nairobi Declaration calling for a 23 billion dollar Green Growth Fund

We live in a world of increasing Declarations. It seems every time any group meets they have to close with a very sincere, very much debated Declaration. Followed by super sounding Pledges, followed mostly, by Business as Usual.

For Tourism and Climate of course, the big enchilada was the Glasgow Declaration committing signatories to Net Zero 2050 and transformation pathways, in a then famous “Race To Zero”. At the time SUNx Malta was a launch signatory BUT with a proviso that “it did not go far enough, fast enough” and calling for a DASH to zero – Declare Act Support Hope. We continue to maintain that position and lament that the Glasgow Declaration with all the high powered UNWTO driven PR push has less than 1000 signatories worldwide – including lots of individuals.
In early September we saw two new Declarations – one out of the G20 in India repeating much of what was in Glasgow…and with a contemporaneous UNWTO SDG support initiative – which we welcome, as a valuable contribution to Climate Friendly Travel.
The second is more interesting for SUNx Malta – the Nairobi Declaration calling for a 23 billion dollar Green Growth Fund. Given that 33 of the LDCs are in Africa we plan to align our own nascent “Strong Climate Facility” with its objectives. Indeed, our vision of Climate Friendly Travel has many similar goals – in, of course, a microscopic way. This includes:

  • Our pivot to the poorest and focus on LDC and SIDS
  • 100 Diploma Students from these States on scholarships from our Malta Government partners.
  • Creation of 50 CFT Chapters in LDCs
  • Our Strong Conclave calling for emission peaking in 2025 (the key to Green Growth), halfling by 2030 and real zero in 2050 (No net blah, blah, blah !!! )
  • Our call for SAF Justice and a “moon-shot for clean aviation”
  • Our Strong Climate Facility for education and capacity building for Climate Friendly Travel in LDC & SIDS.

So we can go on record as welcoming the Nairobi Declaration and Pledging sincerely to play our small part in helping the vital Tourism sector to respond positively and creatively with Climate Friendly Travel.
